More NHL: | | | | | A short season means a short general manager meetings se sion, which will be held on Wednesday. As usual, the agenda will be packed and there will only be six hours to talk.In other words, we might not see a ton get done during the meetings. However there will be some ideas coming up in conversation from the men who run teams.You can expect a few of the usual talking points, namely hybrid icing and visors. Hybrid icing has been something that GMs have been going after for a while Kaleb Wesson Jersey -- they want to see the races called off before the players reach the goal lines, rewarding the "win" to the player closest. The idea is to keep the race in the game since icing in the international game looks awful, but save the players from taking the race to the boards where serious injury can occur. On the visor debate, there's not a whole lot the GMs can do other than suggest players wear them. Before the league could ever mandate it, the NHLPA would have to be on board with it and that's not happening anytime soon. But you can understand why GMs want the rule to be in place; they have vested interests in the well-being of their players. They pay a lot of money to sign these guys and they want their investments on the ice.There even figures to be mention and more growing support of a coach's challenge. I am still not on board with this idea as it just seems too difficult to implement in hockey, but the more terribly mi sed calls we see, the more the call will be made for challenges.The most interesting conversations on the agenda , though, concern overtime/shootouts and goalie pads (in my opinion, at least). Ever since the lockout eight years ago, fans of the NHL have been dealing with the shootout. Coincidentally over that same time frame fans have been complaining about the shootout. Very few seem to actually like it. The same can be said for GMs like Detroit's Ken Holland. From Klein:Good idea and one that I would like to see tried out somewhere else. In the rare situations that 3-on-3s have popped up before in the NHL, it's undoubtedly exciting. Though I do wonder what happens to penalties in the 3-on-3 situation; would teams then be reduced to a 3-on-2 situation? As it stands now players can't be penalized down to just two skaters on the ice at once.There's also the excellent idea of switching ends of the ice to make longer changes from the bench. If players have a harder time getting off the ice it should lead to more chances with tired legs. This is such a simple and practical suggestion it should be implemented immediately.Of course, I still believe the best way to solve the overtime/shootout i sue is to just go to a three-point system (3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT/SO win, 1 point for an OT/SO lo s, 0 points for a regulation lo s). It would really help diminish the significance of the shootout as a tie-breaker. You get the result of no ties without the inequity in the standings. There just doesn't seem to be an appetite for that. Then there is also the size of goalie gear. GMs are getting closer and closer to the point of saying cut it down or make the nets bigger as Devils GM Lou Lamoriello told Klein.Personally, I'm not bothered by the way it stands now, I don't need a ton of goals to make the game more entertaining. The same way that I enjoy a good pitcher's duel in baseball or defensive battle in football, I like a good goalie game. Plus, goalies are pretty important and so you want to see them stay healthy. Just ask Ben Scrivens if they are .But to most, goals are good and they want to see more. Because it's that we want more. If we really like it, we want more.Finally, the GMs will try to find time to . Claude Julien's rant against the Canadiens isn't the sole reason, but it didn't hurt to kick start the conversation again. Much like the challenge idea, I'm not sure how you can really deter embellishment in the game. The best way, in my book, is to make it subject to some form of supplemental discipline and I doubt the PA would be cool with fines for something that's just worth a two-minute penalty. It will be interesting to see if the GMs are able to make any substantial ground in six short hours on Wednesday, but we can only hope they Alen Smailagic Jersey learned from watching the NHL and NHLPA bicker for months on how to be efficient and not waste your time.
